Can you identify this plant?
We found 2 planting pots with these odd plants growing in them when we moved into our home in December. They were just tiny green balls until February, when they started to grow and get leaves. So far, there are no blossoms or buds or any indication that it will flower anytime soon.
The plants stand 12-18″ tall. The leaves or a light grey-green color with a semi-thick, leathery texture. The main stem has an outer layer and separate inner core that is easily separated. Similar to the way the center comes out of a carrot, except it is much softer than a carrot. It smells like a typical house plant when you break open a leaf. Like an african violet leaf, not the blossom.
That’s all I can tell you.
Here’s a link so you can see it up close.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Looks like some type of Sedum, probably ‘Autumn Joy’ or ‘Brilliant’. (They’re most commonly used of that size.)
It will flower at the end of the summer, usually mauve-pink. It loves sun and well-drained garden soil.

Blood on the Leaves $12.99 In the 1960s, racism was rampant in Jackson, Mississippi, and it was common for white men caught in the act of killing blacks to be acquitted by all-white juries. But 40 years later, someone is seeking justice; those same men are turning up dead – in the identical manner in which they killed their victims. Now, James Reynolds, who has overcome the odds – and his own personal demons – to become the only black prosecutor in Jackson, will face the toughest case of his life: He’ll have to prosecute prime suspect Martin Matheson, a brilliant professor, the son of a venerated Civil Rights leader, and the newly appointed folk hero for thousands of African Americans hungry for retribution. |

Leaves from the Fig Tree $20.89 With humour, eloquence, empathy and delightful Gaelic charm, Diana, as a child, travels from Johannesburg to Ireland to a stately home with world-famous gardens. While the talk above stairs was of horses, rare plants and fishing; below stairs it was of banshees, the little people, raths and the foxy-haired ghost. As an adult she returned to Africa, where she doubled for Grace Kelly in Mogambo; unwittingly employed a Mau Mau leader; met the king of cheetah racing; challenged the authorities at the height of apartheid – and emerged victorious. ‘Diana Duff’s memoir is feisty, humorous and poignant. It’s an evocation of a lifestyle that the world will never accommodate again – particularly in Africa. More’s the pity, because somehow we don’t seem to breed such iconoclastic, fey and nonconformist characters any more. Diana has a remarkable memory for detail, and she writes with a kind of wry wit that is most engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Leaves from the Fig Tree’ and look forward to Diana’s next book.’ – Patricia Glyn, broadcaster, journalist, committed African and author of Footing with Sir Richard’s Ghost and Off Peak.’The Kikiyu people … were to me fascinating … the descriptive way in which they spoke of things, illustrating with hand and tongue a thing that had happened, so that it came alive. One spoke to me once of years passing and conjured up a picture of a great fig tree, the leaves falling, each leaf another year of his life.’ |

The Story of an African Farm $24.98 The full African moon poured down its light from the blue sky into the wide lonely plain. The dry sandy earth with its coating of stunted karoo bushes a few inches high the low hills that skirted the plain the milk-bushes with their long finger-like leaves all were touched by a weird and an almost oppressive beauty as they lay in the white light.’ (Excerpt from Chapter 1) |
