Proper Maintenance for Diesel Generators by Sarah Michaels
In the event of a power outage, you want the peace of mind that your John Deere or Kohler diesel generator will serve as a dependable back-up power source for you and your household. However – just like with every piece of heavy machinery – proper maintenance is crucial to its survival. To ensure that you have a safe and efficient generator in the event of an emergency, follow a regular maintenance schedule.
Maintaining diesel generators in Florida or any other location takes daily, weekly, monthly and annual check-ups to ensure that all parts and accessories work properly. Before turning on the generator, make sure to check for any gasoline or engine oil leaks. In addition, check for the AC receptacle and DC terminal for any visible damage. It is also important to look out for any loose or broken bolts, nuts or shields. If you find any of these issues before turning on your generator, take it in to an authorized service center or dealer for the proper repairs.
If you use your diesel generator regularly, make sure to check the maintenance schedule provided in the product manual. Along with daily check-ups, certain maintenance items need to be checked weekly (or every 50 hours) including the air element and spark plug, both of which need to be clean. Every 100 hours, make sure to change the engine oil and check the spark arrester. On a monthly basis, or every 200 hours, replace the air element, clean the fuel filter and clean and adjust the spark plugs and electrodes.
If you use your diesel generator past 500 hours, take it in to replace the spark plugs; remove carbon from cylinder head; and check and adjust the valve clearance and the carburetor; and clean and replace carbon brushes. Finally, after 1,000 hours of using your diesel generator, overhaul engine, replace the engine mount, check the rotor and replace fuel lines.
It is important to note that the replacement, repair and adjustment of these maintenance items must be performed by an authorized service center or dealer, whether you own Kohler or John Deere generators.
