Cannas WILL spread like crazy but they are also very easy to dig up so it’s really not a problem. If you don’t thin them out every couple of years it will just take you longer so it’s best to do it every spring. I take scissors and cut the dead leaves off in late March. (I leave them on the ground all winter to protect the plant from freezing). It’s then easy to see what you want to keep. Take a spading fork and lift out the plants you don’t want (for the 1st couple of years you can give them to friends, after that you’ve usually run out of friends so you have to just throw them away!). I also cut the blooms back to the base when they’re done so they don’t look messy, that way the green looks nice all summer. In my experience they will grow in any kind of soil, even heavy clay, with no problem. I’ve never had any insects bother them. Just stay on top of thinning them out and you’ll be rewarded with a carefree, beautiful plant. Mine are in full sun in zone 7.
