Do the chemicals in weed killer herbicides bioaccumulate in the human body?
I am a 17 year old male. Every Thursday, the lawn people walk in front of my room and spray a clear herbicide from a pack worn on the back, onto the pinestraw distanced approximately five feet from my wall (which is more a giant window than a wall). The house is relatively new (built in the late 1999s) and the whole house air conditioning system is filtered. The air intake vent is located on the other side of the house from where they spray. In my room, I have a HEPA/Activated Carbon Air Filter especially suited for removing chemicals from the air.
Should I be concerned about the chemical, nonetheless, still managing to partially permeate through my window? If this happens, what does it do to me? Will it bioaccumulate in my tissue, fat, and organs?.. Or will the livers simply detox it out of my system and cast out the poisons with ease? Could the possible exposure have negative effects on my nervous system?
What I find strange is why they do it every week, it doesn’t make sense. Most herbicides usually take two weeks to work as it takes time for the chemical to migrate to the roots. It seems to me that the lawn people are overspraying and that is waste of chemical as well as your money. Unless you are absolutely drenched in the spray I wouldn’t worry too much. Your filters should be doing a good job of removing any airborne spray particles. As a precaution you should make sure that your filter elements are regularly cleaned. And don’t worry about anything getting through the glass unless you have holes in it. Ordinary window glass is dense and not porous so the spray won’t come through the glass. Still if you are worried ask your doctor to do some blood tests as there is a lot of things they can determine from blood tests.
