Should I season the cast iron grates on my new stove?
I just purchased a new stainless steel range with cast iron burners and a cast iron griddle insert for the center burner. I have read on line about seasoning cast iron cookware, but I can’t find anything that talks about seasoning stove grates. I have made an attempt at seasoning the griddle insert, and was wondering if I should season the grates. I seasoned the insert by rubbing with Crisco and baking in a 500 degree oven for about 3 hours. I read that it was supposed to smoke, which it never did, so I turned it off. I’m hoping it doesn’t all wash of when I clean the griddle for the first time.
The reason I bought a stove with cast iron grates is because the white on white stove I had (with light gray grates) had grease burnt onto them and looked terrible. I thought about seasoning the grates so if grease splatters or food boils over its easier to clean.

the reason we season cast iron pots and pans is to make them less sticky – so food doesn’t stick as bad, so we don’t have to wash the cast iron in water so hard or so often AND and so the pan doesn’t rust.
so it makes perfect sense to me to season the griddle.
i can’t think of any reason to season the grates.
But you could always call or email the stove maker and get their advice.
