String Trimmers: The New Way To Groom Your Lawn
Lawnmowers generally blaze through your yard to get the grass trimmed neatly in no time.
Unfortunately, some yards have obstacles that lawnmowers can’t trim around easily, and these may be flower beds or other lawn ornaments that have grass, bushes, or even weeds growing around them.
It would be difficult to whack through growths around these obstacles with a lawnmower, and using garden shears is too much work.
String trimmers, then, are the solution to this snag.
But before hightailing it to a store to get one, several things should be considered before you decide on the best string trimmer that meets all your needs and preferences.
First, do you want a gas-powered, electric, or cordless string trimmer? Each has its own pros and cons.
Gas-powered string trimmers are heavier, but are more powerful, suited for larger yards, and convenient, since the user isn’t hampered by a cord or the battery life.
An electric string trimmer is suitable for smaller yards – it has enough power to cut through most bushes and grass, but the cord length limits the user’s working space.
Using a cordless string trimmer is getting a compromise between the two: unrestricted movement around the yard, but with a limitation on the battery life, since it has to be recharged after about fifteen minutes, or after a few hours, depending on the model.
Think about what other features you might want, because some models have additional features, but may also have additions on the price tag.
For those who may want gas-powered trimmers, the amount of force needed to pull the cord starter may be reduced with the spring-assisted advanced starting system.
For users who prefer gas-powered string trimmers, there is such a thing as a spring-assisted advanced starting system, which reduces the amount of force needed to pull the cord to start the machine, making its start-up a lot easier.
There are also other trimmer attributes to consider, aside from power source and engine type.
One could choose between a straight shaft or a curved one.
A straight shaft is suited for taller operators, and is quite handy when trimming beneath decks or underneath shrubbery; a curved one, on the other hand, is more lightweight and is much more comfortable to use.
Different cutting widths also pose different options for users: 15-18 inch cutting width for heavy duty users, or 8-12 inch or 14-15 inch cutting widths for less frequent users.
Cutting heads also dispense strings differently: semi-automatic (or tap-and-go) cutting heads require users to tap the head on a solid, flat surface.
In contrast, automatic cutting heads require no user action as it dispenses string automatically as necessary.
And as for fixed-line cutting heads, a manual replacement of string is needed.
But if all else fails, there’s still the fixed-line cutting head, entails having the user manually replace strings as necessary.
String trimmers really are quite helpful when you do yard work, especially in whacking weeds in those hard-to-reach areas.
