Why won’t my lawn mower engine start?
The model is Briggs and Stratton 8HP 319cc, from the late 1970′s early 1980′s (not sure exactly). It is on a Dixon ZTR ride-on lawn mower. The starter motor turns the engine but it won’t fire.
I have only minor knowledge of engines and can not do major repairs or restorations. I have charged the battery and it sounds like it is about to start every time.
I have also taken off the mowing part if that helps…
@AC DC – I have bought a new spark plug and plugged it in and it seems to be working alright.
The Mower is also using fuel as I can smell the exhaust and there is much less fuel in the tank.
@going_for_baroque – I will try taking off the air filter and starting it as this may be the problem. Thank-you for your help. I do have a bit of experience with engines but not enough to confidently pull apart the carburettor.
it sounds like you need a new spark plug. spark plugs are not expensive, so check how many you have got on your mower and go to a car parts shop or mower shop with the spark plug and they can probably get you a spark plug. i dont think the spark plug will be giving it enough spark to get the engine moving.
if not spark plug it could be the choke ,petrol off or not getting through
