i just had the drive belts changed, why is my battery light now on in my BMW x5?
I had drive belt replaced Friday and Saturday my battery indicator came on. It was not on before I took it in to be repaired.
I had belts replaced becaue more than one technician at 2 different placed told me that they were going bad and recommended they be replaced soon. My battery inidcator light has never come on until the belts were done.
The drive belts on your BMW are automatically adjusted for tension BUT, the tensioner must be set correctly so the auto-tensioner can function properly. There are two bolts that lock the tensioner and a 17mm bolt that sets it. Most mechanics who are not experienced with BMW’s can make the mistake of not setting the tensioner correctly which causes the belt to slip and become damaged. Setting the tensioner takes a bit of muscle and tact. Obviously, visually inspect the area to make sure no wires or connectors have been accidentally disconnected. If all checks out, have the mechanic properly set the tensioner. If he is unable, ask for your money back and take it to a BMW dealership.
