Easter Traditions All Over The World
It would be easy, being immersed in one’s own culture and Easter traditions, simply to assume that every Christian congregation celebrates this special event on the church calendar in the same way. There are definitely some overlaps, because after all, Christians all over the world are commemorating the same things. Yet the history of Easter is slightly different in every society, and the way that each separate culture celebrates is also going to vary.
One of the most famous of the Easter traditions, or perhaps more properly considered a pre-Easter tradition, is the Carnival. This occurs in church traditions, mostly Catholic and Orthodox, which have a forty-day Lent period preceding Easter. During this time, believers engage in fasting and abstinence to prepare for the solemnity and meaning of Easter itself. So the Carnival, taking place just prior to Lent, is the last chance to let off steam before this contemplative period. Two of the most well-known of these Carnivals are in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Congregations associated with the Greek Orthodox branch of the church use slightly different Easter traditions than those of the west. For example, while they do use Easter eggs, those in this tradition are painted red, to symbolize the blood of Christ. In Eastern Europe, on the other hand, the eggs are lavishly decorated with complex designs. These churches and those of other Eastern European countries also celebrate the season at a slightly different time, since the dates of Easter are calculated differently in the western and eastern churches.
In some countries, people probably don’t want to delve too deeply into the Easter traditions of the society, so the pagan roots of the customs don’t become troublesome. For example, the huge bonfires that have often been lit on Easter Saturday in some parts of Scotland owe more to the pagan spring festivals than to an original Christian influence. Easter facts like these, though, should not be too troublesome to believers. In most traditions, what’s considered really important is the intention of the heart, rather than the surface customs.
