Emergency Shutdown for overheating engine?
On a Nissan Pickup, my dad replaced the radiator and the engine mounted cooling fan and replaced it with a pair of electric blowers. One of the blowers failed recently and caused the engine to overheat. I will be replacing it and would like to add additional protection against overheats. How can I install an Emergency Shutdown / Early warning mechanism for an overheating engine? Is there a sensor of some sort and where will I mount it?
A grounding type warning lamp sending unit will work fine with just a simple 12 volt bright red light mounted in your dash. Feed the light 12 volts on one side and put the other side to the sensor. If the engine reaches a certain temperature, the sender will ground the terminal and the light will come on.
For protection against a possible burned out bulb, you can put in a simple, 2 pole momentary switch to ground the bulb manually and test both the bulb and the 12 volt supply to it.
I don’t recommend “an emergency shutdown” – if the light comes on, you can do this yourself when it’s safe to pull off the road and let it cool down. A sudden shut down on a freeway on ramp could be rather exciting – and dangerous.
