Sustainable crop production is vital to ensure that supplies of fresh vegetables and their products are readily available. It is evident that food production needs to become more sustainable to ensure economic stability and poverty reduction. With this in mind, "Tropical Vegetable Production" addresses the problems surrounding vegetable production in developing countries. Divided into two parts this volume discusses firstly the principles and practise of tropical vegetable production, from site selection, security and management to seeds, crop preparation and pesticides, and secondly provides details of those crops which are of particular importance in developing countries.

Vegetable Gardening: From Planting to Picking--

Vegetable Gardening: From Planting to Picking–

$13.58

Now in paperback. Nothing beats the taste of vegetables from a home garden, and with Vegetable Gardening it’s never been easier. With over 80 varieties of vegetables to choose from, eating delicious, just-picked produce is a snap. Learn every step of creating and maintaining a cornucopia of garden-fresh vegetables: from choosing and planning your plot, preparing the soil, selecting seeds or cultivating seedlings, proper watering, harvesting, and storing. From composting and mulching to caring for and harvesting vegetables, it’s clear that most gardeners want to use organic methods and avoid chemical fertilizers and pesticides. But what happens when things go wrong and organic solutions don’t seem to be working? The two authors of this book have different answers to this question. Jane Courtier takes the view that organic methods are the “first, best choice,” but she occasionally uses chemical fertilizer and will resort to chemical pesticides if a serious problem arises. Fern Marshall Bradley writes from the viewpoint of a longtime organic gardener who’s chosen to never use any chemicals in her garden. Together they’ve created a book that looks at vegetable gardening from both points of view. There are substantive issues on both sides-and in the end, it’s an individual choice. Let them help you make up your own mind! Special-feature sidebars provide problem-solver tips, including: Planting Guides with problem-solver tips on what and how much to plant, site preparation, and when to plant Temperature alerts for the best growing temperatures Quick Tips that give additional tidbits of information such as health tips, how to mark the crops, how deep to plant certain seeds, and more Best of the Bunch provides information about the varieties available, how they produce, growing time, annual or perennial, and more Guide to Vegetable Yields, Sowing to Harvest Times, A Guide to Seeds, and many more graphs and charts

Seeds of Change

Seeds of Change

$37

Barbara Kingsolver’s books have sold millions of copies. The Poisonwood Bible was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and her work is studied in courses ranging from English-as-a-second-language classes to seminars in doctoral programs. Yet, until now, there has been relatively little scholarly analysis of her writings. Seeds of Change: Critical Essays on Barbara Kingsolver , edited by Priscilla V. Leder, is the first collection of essays examining the full range of Kingsolver’s literary output. The articles in this new volume provide analysis, context, and commentary on all of Kingsolver’s novels, her poetry, her two essay collections, and her full-length nonfiction memoir, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. Professor Leder begins Seeds of Change with a brief critical biography that traces Kingsolver’s development as a writer. Leder also includes an overview of the scholarship on Kingsolver’s oeuvre. Organized by subject matter, the 14 essays in the book are divided into three sections tha deal with recurrent themes in Kingsolver’s compositions: identity, social justice, and ecology. The pieces in this ground-breaking volume draw upon contemporary critical approaches—ecocritical, postcolonial, feminist, and disability studies—to extend established lines of inquiry into Kingsolver’s writing and to take them in new directions. By comparing Kingsolver with earlier writers such as Joseph Conrad and Henry David Thoreau, the contributors place her canon in literary context and locate her in cultural contexts by revealing how she re-works traditional narratives such as the Western myth. They also address the more controversial aspects of her writings, examining her political advocacy and her relationship to her reader, in addition to exploring her vision of a more just and harmonious world. Fully indexed with a comprehensive works-cited section, Seeds of Change gives scholars and students important insight and analysis which will deepen and broaden their understanding and experience of Barbara Kingsolver’s work. Priscilla V. Leder has published articles in Mississippi Quarterly, ISLE (Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment), Amerikastudien/American Studies, and Southern Studies. She is professor of English at Texas State University—San Marcos.
