Heirloom Seeds

Heirloom+Seeds
Where is the best place to purchase heirloom seeds?

We’ve gotten really good seeds from heirlooms.com. They have a very wide selection, and we’ve had good success with germination. Also, when they do send seeds that are not known to be good germinators, they note it on the package and send you extra seeds. They even threw in a free packet of seeds that we hadn’t ordered as a thank you for being a customer.

An expert guide and introduction for the burgeoning locavore movement on growing, preserving, and cooking with heirloom vegetables, by the farmer whom the New York Times called the “Indiana Jones of seeds.” “As an avid gardener, I always enjoy perusing The Baker Creek Seed Company’s catalogue and have had great success growing the excellent rare seeds I order from it. Now Baker Creek’s Jere and Emilee Gettle have written a book that is sure to inspire, educate and inform new gardeners eager to cultivate their understanding of heirloom seeds, the land, and the sustainable good foods we derive from it.” –Martha Stewart Tired of genetically modified food? From the wooded road made of golden hemlock running past L. Frank Baum’s childhood home to the lonely stump of Scout’s oak in Harper Lee’s Alabama, author Richard Horan gathers tree seeds—and stories—from the homes of America’s most treasured authors. At once a heartfelt paean to literature and a wise, funny, and uplifting account of one man’s reconnection with nature, Seeds celebrates Horan’s triumphs and calamities on his quest to link trees with great writers—a delightfully original meditation on the nature of inspiration and a one-of-a-kind adventure into literature.

Whether you say to-may-to or you say to-mah-to, chances are you’ll agree there’s nothing like the taste of a sun-ripened heirloom tomato—and this beautifully photographed book is a cornucopia for the tomato lover. First there are the recipes: 50 in all, provided by such notable food names as One Market, Caprial’s Bistro, Jimtown Store, and DaVero Olive Oil. Perfect for brunch, cocktails, or dinner, tomatoes are showcased in such delicious dishes as Gazpacho with Cucumber Salsa Verde, Cheese and Pesto Fondue with Tomato-Foccacia Skewers, and Grilled Sea Bass with Lemon-Oregano, Tomato Relish. Accompanying each is a wine pairing suggested by Kendall-Jackson, which each year hosts the Heirloom Tomato Festival in Sonoma—the inspiration for this book. Then there’s the photographic glossary of the top 25 heirloom varieties, detailed cultivation information, and an invaluable sourcelist of seeds and plants to entice those who want to eat their fruit and grow it too. Add to this, advice on choosing and storing tomatoes and a brief history, and you have a book as vibrant as the tomato it celebrates. Mimi Luebbermann is the author of almost 20 books on gardening and cooking and is a contributor to numerous national cooking and gardening magazines.
