There are lots of manmade events which will shape the market in the coming weeks.

Sept. 1
The most vital month — ever — for Netflix (Nasdaq : NFLX) starts today. After all , this is the month where its existing subscribers will start paying as much as 60 percent more to stream video and receive optical discs by mail.
It is a outlining moment for the service, and one that will either find the company validating its model with chunkier margins to boot or leave Netflix scrambling to deal with a dramatic uptick in churn.
Subscribers will start paying the new rates thru their September billing cycle, so we should know where things stand shortly after the end of the 3rd quarter.
Netflix is upbeat. It sees 22 million of its 25 million U.S. Subscribers paying $7.99 a month to stream from its growing digital library, and almost 1/2 its users paying for both the streaming and DVD plans. How sticky is Netflix? We are about to find out.
Sept. Thirteen
Best Buy (NYSE : BBY) reports its fiscal Q2 ends up in 2 weeks. This used to be a joyous event for growth backers, but the electronics giant has shorted out recently.
Best Buy has delivered 3 sequential quarters of year-over-year declines in comparable-store sales and profits. Analysts are not all that thrilled about the slinking retailer this time. They see Best Buy checking in with a profit of $0.54 a share, well short of the $0.60 a share it posted a year before.
The success of more agile online outlets offering better pricing and the digital revolution that’s replacing the requirement for physical CDs, DVDs, books, and video games are making life tougher for Best Buy.
Sept. Thirteen is also the moment when Nintendo will be hosting a 3DS event in Tokyo for analysts and backers. All eyes are on the video game pioneer after a desperate 32% price cut on the handheld system that it had introduced just five months earlier.
Shares of Nintendo lately hit a five-year low, so any good news will be welcome. Nintendo will probably be hyping up new 3DS software titles that’ll be out before the vacation shopping season. Rumours are circulating of a radical redesign, but that appears unlikely since it might crush any vacation momentum that the Aug price cut might have made. New games and marginals are the better bet, and even then Nintendo is still going to have a tricky time against the improving quality of smartphone games that are practically being given away.
Sept. 22
There are not too many takings reports slated for September, but a crucial one will come from FedEx (NYSE : FDX) in 3 weeks.
Even if you aren’t an investor, FedEx’s financials carry a fair deal of business weight. If companies are sending more documents and parcels around — and consumers are not worrying over paying a bit more for speedy deliveries — the economy can’t be doing all that badly.
Analysts expect FedEx to earn $1.52 a share for the quarter, a good 27% improvement over last year’s showing.
Sept. Twenty-three
Few take terrestrial radio giant Clear Channel (OTC : CCMO) seriously when it comes to online streaming, but which will change in 3 weeks.
Clear Channel is hosting a two-day music festival — bringing some of the industry’s biggest recording stars including Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Lady Gaga to Vegas — to introduce the updated iHeartRadio app.
Clear Channel’s existing app is already pretty popular. It offers smartphone owners free streaming access to 750 different rock radio stations from all over the country. Nonetheless Pandora (NYSE : P) — and to a smaller extent Sirius XM Radio (Naz : SIRI) — will need to be concentrating when some of the new features are introduced.
“The new version is everything you would like in one place,” Ryan Seacrest provoked during July’s festival announcement.
“Real radio stations from towns across the country, and coming soon custom radio like Pandora but with more songs, more control, and no commercials thru the end of the year.”
