Authority Sites Versus Mini Sites – The Debate Continues
Mini sites have been a part of online marketing for a long time as has the debate over building an authority site or the mini site. However, Google has added some increasing pressure as to the way these types of sites are viewed and has considered how people view them. Yet the long-standing liking Google seems to have had for mini sites seems to be nearing its end. In the last few algorithm changes, though, the larger content rich sites seemed to have gained favor over the mini sites. This is Google’s way of working towards offering their users better search results. But a mini site can still, believe it or not, have a positive use in your marketing.
When you choose either a mini site or an authority site, you are casting your marketing net to capture a particular type of audience. In some cases, the two can be similar, though the scale will be different.
An authority site is recommended if you want to sell a variety of products in a popular niche. If you are using the minisite model, then that would only allow you to target one particular product within the larger market. Which approach you decide is entirely up to you, and there are many reasons why you would want to choose one over the other.
It is somewhat obvious that an authority site will demand much more work, time, and commitment than the smaller mini site. How you feel about this will depend on your personality, as well as how much time you have available. People who enjoy constant changes often prefer mini sites. When you know how to build mini sites, or if you use automated tools, you can create a new one daily. You need more patience if you want to build an authority site. They aren’t totally different, however, as you can consider an authority site to be lots of mini sites under one domain.
When you have an authority site, you’ll want to frequently add fresh content, whereas with mini sites you may just want to keep making new ones.
There are so many more ways to make money with an authority site. If you are getting a lot of traffic, then you can monetize it with advertising space that you sell. You will find that other considerations about your market and traffic will determine how well you can monetize your site. Banner space is a favorite ad revenue model for most authority sites ranked high in the serps. On the other hand, selling ad space is not the only way to make money. Because all your marketing ventures are unique, it’s important to consider them all separately. Each business you have has unique characteristics that involve the entire spectrum ranging from marketing/advertising considerations to your own personal interests. With this in mind it would be completely unwise to imply that either authority or min sites were superior to the other.
