Are there non toxic tests for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates?
I hear everywhere that the liquid tests are much more accurate than the test strips – therefore I want to use the liquid ones. However, the liquid tests involve toxic chemicals (ie the ammonia test, nitrate test, and nitrites tests in every kit I’ve seen say they are dangerous to touch, inhale, etc) and I want my kids to be able to help out. Are there any non toxic versions where I won’t have to worry about this?
The liquid ones really are the very best and the reagents, unfortunately, are all toxic.
Maybe you could put the kids in charge of filling the test tubes or shaking the tubes or give them latex gloves?
Taking the samples to the pet store is the least responsible way to test water, they use cheap tests too, you don’t know how old they are, they often only give a range that the tests are reading at, and the employees are glorified cashiers.
