Any substitutes for pink pampas grass up north?
We’re in zone 5A, and pampas (thing of beauty: http://www.amazon.com/Pink-Pampas-Grass-200-Seeds/dp/B000SMA0C8) is just not possible in New York. Does anyone have another idea? I’m also looking into sporobolus wrightii as a substitute, but nothing comes close to those giant pink blooms. We want something big for privacy, and already have some young arborvitae growing (though it hasn’t taken off like we had hoped). Any help would be greatly appreciate.
I’m sorry to say, but….no. At least, not perennial.
If it’s grasses you prefer, you can try “Karl Forster” or “Avalanche” feather reed grass; or any of the switch grasses. All get tall, are completely hardy in Zone 5. For color, you could intersperse with Japanese blood grass, which is a beautiful deep red during the growing season but only reaches about 18″. Again, hardy in Zone 5.
