Bio solids and the nitrogen cycle?
Your neighbor across the street decided that she will use biosolids obtained from the
Lincoln water treatment plant free of charge. She applied the biosolids about the same time
that you applied the wood chips. What might the dominant process in her soil be
after biosolids application?
a. denitrification b. volatilization c. mineralization d. immobilization
What will be the impact on the sweet corn grown on her soil soon after biosolids
incorporation?
a. Enough available N b. N toxicity c. N deficiency d. Nothing
Why are you applying wood chips on your neighbor’s property? Very odd.
In the first few days/weeks, the dominant phase will be volatilization, assuming there is ammonium present in the biosolids.
Continually over a few years, mineralization of the organic nitrogen found in the biosolids.
The second question depends on the C:N ratio, which isn’t defined. If there is too much carbon (wood chips), the nitrogen may not be available to the agronomic crop.
It also depends on the application rate of the biosolids. If enough plant-available nitrogen isn’t provided by the biosolids or any existing carryover/residual nitrogen, there will be a nitrogen deficiency.
Based on the concepts found in the question, you probably should look into composting (biosolids or otherwise). Here’s a place to start:
