Can I use a pond filter for a turtle tank?
I’m going to buy at least a 55 gallon tank for my two red eared sliders and I was wondering if I could use a pond filter for there tank. Pond filters are only a little more expansive on ebay than canister filters and have much higher flow rates but I don’t know if there filtration is as good. Thanks for any help guys
I wouldn’t be as worried about them getting sucked into the filter because you get attachments for the intake to block it from sucking anything in like vegetation (for ponds) or animal life.
My worry about using a pond filter for a tank would be the amount of flow the filter would have, depending on the size, it may cause to much flow and cause to much turbulence in the tank for the turtles to comfortably swim around. You may just want to get the canister filter, or even a HOB, or both, get a small canister and a good HOB. I like having two filters anyways, allows you to clean one while the other is still running, also if one breaks you have a backup.
