Pond Liner Sizing Question?
I am looking to purchase pond liner made by Pondepot, and I noticed that in the seller’s description, that the liner is a 10×10 20 mil liner, and the seller is saying that this liner will do a 7×7 pond, which is around 600 gallons.
My Question is; what will the maximum depth be if this pond is in a square shape, @ 7ft length, by 7ft,width, and also if it is in a square shape, @ 5 ft feet, by 5 ft width, and how do I find out the different ways that this liner can be arranged while being a 10×10 liner (oval, circular,square, rectangle), while not exceeding the dimensions of the liner when planing/excavating?

An old high school geometry book will give you all the formulas for calculating the length, width, and depth variations you can use for oval, square, circular, rectangle and trapezoid shaped ponds. My main pond is a slight trapezoid, about a foot wider on the front side than on the back. It creates the illusion that it’s a rectangle with greater distance than it really has, because the eye assumes the shorter back side is the same width as the front one. To do this, the bottom slopes upwards and is about six inches shallower right at the front of the pond. This slope also makes cleaning the pond easier since debris tends to settle at the deep edge.
It’s a good idea to bring the liner so it is under the first layer of rock or flagstones and folds up on top of the outer edge of the flagstone, then is covered by a second flagstone or rock work. This protects the liner from damage from sunlight and also eliminates the artificial look of seeing an exposed edge of liner. You will have to subtract the width and height of the flagstone plus another two inches for the folded over lip. With a 10 by 10 liner, you don’t have much to work with, so making do with some exposed liner may be necessary.
Assuming a ten by ten liner, a seven by seven pond would be one and a half feet deep, but you will lose about four inches for the overlap, so in reality it would be fourteen inches deep. If you use four by eight inch flagstones to conceal the liner edge, you would only have a seventy six inch by fourteen inch pond. That’s three hundred and fifty gallons.
A five by five foot pond would be twenty six inches deep, deep enough to winter over hardy pond plants and even goldfish in a mild winter climate zone. If you use those flagstones again to conceal the liner edge, the real dimension of the pond is fifty two inches wide, about 305 gallons.
With oval and round ponds, you lose a lot of liner, reducing the volume and surface area of your pond. Since you already have a square liner, you would lose pond size with a rectangular pond too.
Also with curved walls you have to make a lot of pleats along the sides, that have to be looked after as you fill the pond so they look right. With a square or rectangular pond, you gather up the excess liner in the corners into a triangle, and then roll it up and tuck the top of the roll under the rock work. If you conceal it by making the triangle, then flipping the triangle behind one side, there will be a slot that fish can push themselves into but can’t find their way out. It looks neater to hide the triangle that way than to have a roll, but the seam should be sealed with pond liner cement or tape or you will lose fish.
