Invert Osmosis: How Various Stages?

I typically get asked by friends and shoppers alike, “how many stages do i need in your Reverse Osmosis (RO) process? “

It’s a terrific question that often gets noted and as there are a growing number of systems available using 5+ stages it is critical to understand what several stages do and whether they are a good IM Empires investment.

In order to best can see this it is advisable to quickly know very well what a basic RO system is and how it works.

The most basic Reverse Osmosis only require 2 portions. The first period, a carbon filter does two things. It filters down to a certain micron rating (a micron can be a measurement of size, if someone is talking about filtering down for a certain micron level, they are referring to how small a particle would need to be to get through the filter) and it also removes chemicals through chemical reaction (chemicals in the water bond into the carbon block and find stuck there). In an RO system this could be labelled as ‘pre-filtration’ as it occurs prior to the RO membrane.

The 2nd stage, the RO membrane itself is a thin film of composite material that filters on a molecular level rejecting most contaminants in the pool by size and also electrical charge. The holes or ‘pores’ inside film are so fine that water will flow through under pressure, the more stress the faster your can flow by way of. Since tap water pressure isn’t that high, the flow rate in the pure water by using a RO membrane is quite slow and would take a few momemts to fill one glass. To combat this, reverse osmosis systems (as within the picture above) will usually contain a tank. This tank is actually pressurised and fills up over time from the RO. Then when drinking water is called for, the small engage is pressed and the tank empties for a very usable run rate (5-8 seconds to fill some glass).

This is the spot where the additional stages include. Because the blocked water is stored with the tank that comes with a internal rubber bladder, the pool can develop some sort of taste, particularly if it can be left in the tank a long time. Enter the 3 rd stage – “Post treatment”. An alternate Carbon filter is defined between the tap along with the tank to take away any final preferences from water stored within the tank.

So that three stages: Pre-filtration, Alter Osmosis Membrane & Post-filtration. Anything more than this and you’re beginning to buy into ‘bells & whistles’ that costs a lot of cash each time you must replace them.

4 Stage: People can on occasion put a sediment filter ahead of initial carbon clean. This sediment filter is like finely wound organic wool. The advantage of doing this is that the sediment filter will remove particles from the water before they reach the initial carbon filter. Carbon filters will be more expensive to exchange that sediment and they are also more very likely to blocking up. The Sediment filter is a higher micron rating than the carbon and defends the carbon from blocking as much quickly, just for the carbon protects your RO membrane from consequently blocking up too quickly.

5 Stage: A lot of people count the tank being a stage, others will quickly add a never growing list of add-on filters that an ever increasing list of ‘amazing things’ to your water including re-introducing many of the minerals and in ways that your filter has just taken out.

More still will present things like anti-scalant pre-filters to fix the RO membrane from scaling. The cost of while using anti-scalant cartridge outweighs your savings provided with replacing the RO filters. So they’re a bad idea on that front as well.

6, 7 & 8 period: Marketing, arms battle, etc etc, this line of thinking that obviously a 6 stage are going to be better than some sort of 5 stage etc . is really just ways to get consumers to buy more than they need. You can guarantee that the water quality made available from these additional stages is going to be no better, as it does not take RO membrane again that does many of the hard work and most of the systems have an individual.

The other thing that is not stressed enough is that when it comes time to product your 8 period Reverse Osmosis method, you’ll be paying for 8 different replacement cartridges which is going to take a small investment into an unnecessary expense.
