Must I ground an exterior 110 V post lamp. Only two wires are available (no third ground wire)?
The wire is buried under the lawn and underground sprinkler piping and runs from GFCI exterior plugs to post lamp locations (about 100 feet). The lamps use 110VAC compact fluorescents. The wire looks to be about 12 gauge exterior wiring.
Yes, you must connect the light fixture to the ground wire. National Electrical Code section 250.110(2) requires a connection to the “equpiment grounding conductor” for damp locations. An exterior post lamp is definitely in a damp location.
And you’re going to have trouble with this installation. GFCI circuits tend to nuisance trip when the total downstream wire length exceeds 50 feet.
The proper way to wire this post lamp is to not use a GFI, and to bond the fixture to the copper ground wire. Yes, there has to be one in there unless that wire was installed 30 years ago before ground wires were always present.
