Luxury Train Travel Through The World
Luxury train travell is sandwiched between horse drawn carriages and air travel. For a relatively short period trains were used as the main means of international travel. Today, bullet and underground trains work within countries but air travel serves most international travellers. Luxury train travel is for those who yearn for leisure, and the romance of a bygone age.
The Orient Express was the mother of all luxury trains. It ran from Paris to Constantinople between 1883 and 1909. This was the original service. Other train services with the same name have kept the romance of the name alive, as has the Agatha Christie’s tale, ‘Murder on the Orient Express.
The classic Orient Express ran for two thousand kilometres, stopping at eighteen stations. This luxury train carried luxury sleeper carriages which became more luxurious as time went by. But it is really the romance of the name that endures.
When the Orient Express name was taken over by private enterprise it branched out into different routes. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express was formed in 1982. It concentrated on leisure travellers interested in the elegance and history of rail travel, especially when it involved crossing national boundaries.
1920 – 1930 carriages have been restored to their pristine state. They run from London to Venice and also on other journeys. Luxury Pullman carriages take passengers on shorter excursions to events such as the Cowes Regatta. Sumptuous carriages are associated with particular events in their lives such as when they carried an important personage on a particular event.
Echoes of India’s past as part of the British Empire are bounced off the latest of a few luxury trains operating in that country. Maharajahs’ Express runs four eleven night luxury trips taking tourists to see India’s wonders in style. One interesting feature of these trips is the inclusion of a famous and knowledgeable figure that gives talks in the course of a tour and is available for conversations as the journey progresses. In this way a link is formed between the interior and exterior for the touring party
For those interested in Africa there are options available to tour many parts of the continent. Trains embark from Capital Park rail museum in Pretoria for various destinations such as Cape Town, Dar es Salaam and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls. There is a choice of luxury suites ranging from the Royal Suite to the Pullman berths. Fine food and attentive service is offered, and the observation car offers comfortable sight seeing in Africa.
