Channel 4 HD and BBC Red Button: Making Freesat Televisions More Appealing
With the recent announcement that Freesat will be adding a High Definition Channel 4 simulcast and BBC’s Red Button service, televisions are becoming more than just broadcast conduits. They are multiple entertainment systems and the smart viewer is preparing for the coming revolution. 2
The first step is the purchasing of an HD TV. HD TVs have nearly five times the level of detail of standard televisions and often include digital surround sound capabilities. When Channel 4HD joins BBC1 HD, BBC HD and ITV HD in Freesat’s HD line-up in April, viewers will be able to see every sequin in the extravagant dresses worn by the brides in My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and every pore in the faces of the young stars of Skins. 2
HD channels are usually simulcast with their standard counterparts so HD viewers get all the extra quality of picture and sound with no loss in content. Channel 4HD’s appearance on Freesat’s service is only the beginning of the HD broadcast trend. Sky already has over 50 HD channels that will inevitably want to reach viewers outside the subscription service. Filming in HD is already common practice for all the top television shows.
In addition to increases in technical quality, viewers have come to expect a wider range of content options. BBC’s Red Button service, combined with BBC iPlayer and ITV Player gives Freesat customers even more viewing options. They can watch the shows they want whatever day and time they want. Or they can access the wide range of interactive Red Button content, including exclusive videos.
Freesat has additional advantages over comparable services. Unlike Freeview, Freesat uses a satellite dish which provides near universal, high quality clarity independent from the strength of aerial reception. And unlike Sky, Freesat is not a subscription service. There is no cost other than the installation of a satellite dish and the purchase of a receiver box.
Clearly, Freesat has seen the future of television, in all its high definition glory, and is providing their customers with the means to get there.
