How To Approach Flowers In The Fall
After a long winter there is nothing more lovely than a spring garden with decorative garden decor (glass gazing balls are a great addition). In order to achieve a blooming spring garden there are a few things you will need to do.
I’m going to recommend that you go ahead and plant your bulbs and ground phlox first thing in the fall. You
should also put some flower bulb premium fertilizers in each hole as you plant the bulbs-and watch to
the depth of the hole you will be planting your flower bulbs. I recommend planting in groups, odd numbers are best,
interspersed in such a way that other plants will hide their foliage as the bulbs start to
wither. If you go about lazy-dazy style spreading them out to and fro, they tend to make a nice
home garden look like it doesen’t belong.
In the spring after your daffodils and tulips have all bloomed it is important to not cut
down their foliage. You might think its hidious, but cutting this foliage away will hinder these bulbs from
coming into full bloom the following year. Wait until it turns yellow and then it should pull out or cut off easily
enough. Truthfully, if you cannot yank it out of the garden bed then it is not to try and cut
out or cut away. All of the leaves are going to be making food for upcoming seasons blooms. So just
ignore them until they are truly wilted and yellow.
It is also a good idea to put down some bulb fertilizer in the fall and spring over the areas where you have them planted. This will help keep your bulbs happy from year to year. Deer and varmits usually are uninterested in daffodils, so this bulb can be a sure standard
they slowly multiply year after year.
Tulips can be a disappointment!
After a few years they tend to stop blooming or the squirrels have stolen them or the deer have eaten them-they just kind of disappear.
Yes, grape hyacinth and also scilla are both considered to be precious little purplish flower bulbs, but they can spread to the
point of being hinderance to your lawn…and, as you can probably guess, you should want to keep this in your plans when bringing them in. Be sure to have some recycled glass gazing balls and other decorative garden decor too!
Rule of thumb number one is to start the spring garden in the fall…just another reason why planning ahead is a big part of gardening.
