Replacing Engine on Tractor??
I have this 1988, 1989 wheel horse tractor with a 1988 (original) 8 hp briggs and stratton engine (small tractor). The engine is runs ok, but I think it works too hard for the lawn and it may be tired. This engine does surprisingly like to drink the gas for a small hp engine.
I want to replace it with a new 11 hp Briggs and Stratton 0HV Intek engine next season, but I am not sure the proces of this. There seems to be quite a few connections that have to be fit to the tractor ( pulleys on the crankshaft, wire connections ) that seem kind of complicated to me.
I’ve heard from other online posts that it isn’t hard just as long as the engine fits properly, but I don’t seem too sure about that.
Has anyone been down this road before?
If so, any replies would be helpful Thanks.
Measure the mounting bolt pattern and the relationship of the crankshaft – how high and how far out/forward from the center of the bolt pattern – to determine where those things are, then check those measurements against the engine you want to install. If they match up, you should be good to go. If they’re close, you may be able to fudge the fit and still have everything work out okay.
Small aircooled engines are nowhere near as fuel efficient as a car engine. You’ll definitely have more power, but your fuel usage will probably remain about the same. On the upside, the OHV is a bit better on the fuel usage than the old L-head model, so even with the increased power output, you might get slightly lower fuel usage.
