Winterizing Your Swimming Pool
Despite the unseasonable warm weather we’re having at the moment, winter is just around the corner and October and November are the best for people with swimming pools to start to consider closing them until the spring arrives. The main reasons for closing garden pools is to ensure that the pool water stays healthy over the winter months for spring opening and to ensure that the freezing conditions of winter does as little damage to your pool as possible.
The first step to closing your pool is to use swimming pool chemicals to ensure that the water in your pool is balanced, by balancing the pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness in your pool you will help to avoid staining and etching on the surface of the pool. Once you have applied the appropriate chemicals to your pool water you need to lower the water level this needs to be below the mouth of the skimmer, this is done to prevent unnecessary damage from freezing as when water freezes it expands, by lowering the water below the skimmer you will avoid potential damage to delicate parts of the pool.
Next the water lines connected to your pool will need to be flushed of any residual water left in them, this is again to prevent against damaged sustained from frozen water, clearing the lines with a shop vac is the best and easiest method and sealing the ends at the pool will help to keep water out. A cover will also be required to keep any leaf litter out of the pool water, load bearing covers can also be bought to add a certain level of safety to the area however this isn’t vital. One of the last actions you can perform is to drain any residual water from the mechanical equipment that runs your pool, pumps, heaters and filters can all be training of water to help prevent damage sustained from frost and all of these units will have a drainage plug on the base.
